The Pawnee County Commissioners congratulated the Larned Indian Highschool Wrestlers today on their great performances at the Championships in Hays, Kansas. Larned junior Luke Fischer won the Class 3-2-1A state title at 190 pounds by pinning two opponents and defeating second-ranked Kyle Werner in the tie break to reach the finals against top-ranked senior Garrett Urban of Norton. Fischer was trailing that match 2-1 before scoring the state-title winning takedown in the final 30 seconds to win 3-2. Luke compiled a season record of 40 wins and 3 losses. Fischer lost in the blood round last year to miss a medal and came back with a championship mindset to win the title.
Larned senior Carter Atteberry pinned his first opponent, missed the semifinals by a tie-break loss and then won three straight decisions on the back side to reach the consolation finals, where he defeated his Lakin opponent 3-1 to secure third place finish at 215 pounds. Carter ends his career with 117 wins with 86 by fall, holding the Larned High School record for wins by fall.
Larned Indian junior Reece Watkins fought her way to the medal stand for 6th place in the 120 Girls 4-1A State Wrestling Championships.
Pawnee County Commissioners Bob Rein, Philip Hammeke, and Mike Burdett spent time this morning in session to congratulate the wrestlers on a fantastic season and their dedication to the sport. A proclamation was drawn up and presented to the young men and women.
